While the simulation argument is certainly interesting, and explains some of the weirder parts of physics in a novel way (why energy comes in discrete amounts, why there is a maximum speed limit in the universe etc); as a whole I think it is more likely to be just that- a novel idea. There are limits on computation which would mean that any computer could never simulate a universe more complex than the one it existed in. By the reverse of that; if we are within a simulation, then the ‘real’ universe (or at least the universe closer to ‘reality’) within which we are a simulation would be so different from our own that we may not recognise it as reality.
Ultimately though I don’t think the simulation argument is useful because it doesn’t provide testable hypotheses. And we definitely should live our lives as if this is reality!
