For me, I didn’t find it particularly hard as I knew that I enjoyed it and so I just kept following this path. However, I absolutely noticed the difference. At my undergraduate, the ratio was about 80% male, 20% female so it was always pretty obvious. I was also in a few tutorials where I was even the only female. Even now, I work in an analysis group that is all male so there is definitely an imbalance.
I don’t ever feel that it is an issue on a personal level for me though. All of my colleagues are lovely, and to be honest, I don’t really notice the fact that I’m the only female. On a bigger scope though, I think it’s really important to try to address this imbalance and strive to improve the number of women in STEM so I really enjoy highlighting the roles of women in STEM and breaking down the different stereotypes!
